King of Vadakkumcoor directed our ancestors to shift the small church to down area. Malana Muthy and her Christian community
obeyed the order of the King and shifted the church to down area. The traditional belief is that this church received the name ‘Thazhathupally’
since it was shifted to down (thazhathu) area.
It is said that, this church, which was called as ‘cheriapally’ till the end of 17th century, had under gone many relocations and renovations
and it was reconstructed in the present shape in 1590. The kallittathirunal of this church is being celebrated traditionally on August 15th every year.
